Hospitality

The practice of hospitality goes back long before the beginnings of Christianity.  We learned many of our hospitable habits from our Jewish forebears and the Old Testament is filled with examples of the sacred art of welcoming others.

In the New Testament, Hebrews 13:2 tells us:

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers,
for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.”

Romans 15:7 states:

“Welcome one another, therefore,
just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God."

Here at East Woods hospitality is an important function of our church life and it helps us to achieve our goals of being a friendly and welcoming church community.  From our front door greeters to our weekly fellowship table of baked goodies and coffee and tea, our goal is to create an environment where all feel welcome and are glad they came through the front doors at East Woods.

  • Monthly gathering Sunday meals

On the first Sunday of the month a simple meal is served between the 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. service. We serve at 9:45 a.m.  You can attend the earlier service and then have breakfast with us or come early for breakfast and then attend service.

The goal of these Sundays is to provide an opportunity for fellowship…to sit and talk, break bread and to get to know our church family members a little bit better.  Its a wonderful way to share our lives over a simple meal.

  • first time visitor bags

When we recognize someone as a new visitor, they are given a goodie bag with Hershey Kisses, a current newsletter, and a welcome bookmark that says:  East Woods Presbyterian Church….Called to Worship  /  Called to Community  /  Called to be Disciples of Christ.

  • Vacation bible school PotLuck Dinner

In 2014, over 100 adults and children were fed at the end of VBS.  This has become our way to celebrate the children and families who participate in Vacation Bible School.

  • Summer Yard Party

Open to our church community and our surrounding neighbors.  We are “called to community”…and this give us an opportunity to share our wonderful outdoor space with our neighbors.  The event includes fun & games for all ages, live music and, of course, a barbecue!

  • Special event support

Maybe it’s a 50th Wedding Anniversary, a special birthday, concert, memorial service, etc.  We prepare a Fellowship Table with food and drinks to help make the event special for members and guests.
